Rogers Modem Lights: Flashing Orange, Green, White Explained

Quick answer

On a Rogers Xfinity Gateway, solid white means it is online. Flashing orange (Rogers calls it amber) means it is trying to get a signal: tighten the coaxial cable at both ends, restart the modem and wait at least 5 minutes. Flashing green means it is still connecting to Rogers, so restart it and wait 5 minutes for solid white.

Orange and green taking turns is a firmware update: leave it alone for at least 10 minutes. Flashing white means setup is not finished. Complete it in the Rogers Xfinity app.

Seven light states from Rogers’ troubleshooting guide: solid white online; flashing white needs setup; flashing green connecting; flashing orange trying to receive a signal; solid red or orange lost connection; alternating orange and green firmware update; off no power.LIGHTMEANINGDO THISSolid whiteOnline and workingNothing to fixFlashing whiteNeeds setupFinish in the Rogers Xfinity appFlashing greenConnecting to RogersRestart, wait 5 minutesFlashing orange (amber)Trying to get a signalTighten the coax, restartSolid red or solid orangeLost network connectionRestart, wait 5 minutesOrange and green, alternatingFirmware updateWait at least 10 minutesOffNo powerCheck the power cord and outletDashed circle = flashing. Rogers’ current internet modem is the Rogers Xfinity Gateway. Some homes still have an older Hitron gateway with a row of lights, and Rogers keeps a separate guide for those. This page covers both, starting with the Xfinity Gateway.

What do the lights on a Rogers modem mean?

This is Rogers’ own light guide for the Rogers Xfinity Gateway, with the fix it gives for each one.

Solid whiteOnline and workingNothing. If the internet still fails, restart the modem, then your own router if you have one.

Why is my Rogers modem flashing orange?

A flashing orange (amber) light means the modem is trying to receive a signal from Rogers and is not getting one. Every fix Rogers lists points at the cable connection, not the Wi-Fi. Work through them in order:

  1. Tighten the coaxial cable at both ends. Finger-tight is enough, at the modem and at the wall.
  2. Restart the modem. Unplug the power cord, wait, then plug it back in.
  3. Wait at least 5 minutes. The light should settle on solid white.
  4. Remove extras on the cable line. Take out any splitter or amplifier you added yourself, and connect the modem straight to the wall.
  5. Check the cable itself. Look at the thin centre pin at the end of the coax. If it is bent, broken or too short, replace the cable.

If it is still flashing orange after all of that, Rogers says to contact its technical support.

Why is my Rogers modem flashing green?

Flashing green means the modem has power and is connecting to the Rogers network, but has not finished. Restart it and wait at least 5 minutes. If it keeps flashing green, do the same cable checks as for orange: finger-tight coax, no extra splitters or amplifiers, and an undamaged centre pin.

Flashing white, solid red and alternating lights

Flashing white is not a fault. The modem is waiting to be set up, and Rogers says to finish setup in the Rogers Xfinity app. Solid red or solid orange means the connection was lost: unplug the modem, plug it back in and give it at least 5 minutes.

Orange and green taking turns means a firmware update is running. Leave it plugged in. Wait at least 10 minutes and it restarts on its own.

Is a yellow light the same as orange?

Yes. Rogers’ guide calls the colour amber. Depending on the light in the room, people describe the same light as yellow or orange. A flashing yellow light is the flashing amber state above: the modem is trying to receive a signal.

Rogers’ current guide does not list a blue light for the Xfinity Gateway. If your modem shows blue, check which model you have: it may be an older Hitron gateway.

How to restart or reset a Rogers modem

Restart first. Rogers’ restart guide says to unplug the power cord, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. You can also restart it in the Rogers Xfinity app, or from the modem’s admin page at 10.0.0.1. A restart keeps all your settings.

Reset only as a last resort. A factory reset erases your settings, and you have to set the modem up again. The button depends on the generation:

Rogers Xfinity GatewayHow to factory reset
Gen 1Hold the Reset button on the back, under the coaxial connection, with a pointed object, until the light changes back to green.
Gen 2 and Gen 3Hold the WPS button above the phone ports for at least 30 seconds. The top light flashes green quickly and the modem reboots.
Gen 4Hold the Reset button on the back for 15 to 30 seconds. Let go when the light starts flashing green.

Older Rogers Hitron modem lights

Older Rogers Hitron gateways have separate lights. Rogers’ Hitron guide describes them like this:

LightWhat it meansWhat to do
@ light solid greenOnline and providing internetNothing. If the internet still fails, restart the modem, then your router.
Only Power solid green, all others offLost network connectionUnplug, plug back in, and wait at least 30 seconds for the next light.
Up arrow flashing greenReceiving a signal, trying to set up the return pathRestart. Remove extra splitters or amplifiers. Check the coax is finger-tight.
Down arrow flashing greenTrying to receive a signalTighten the coax, restart, check the centre pin, remove splitters.
All lights offNo powerCheck the power cord, power bar and outlet.

After restarting a Hitron gateway, wait at least 5 minutes for the @ light to turn solid green before testing the internet.

Rogers modem still not working? What to check

You use your own router or mesh behind the Rogers modem Rogers gives the order: restart the Rogers modem first and wait for solid white, then restart your own router.
The light is right, but there is still no internet Solid white means the modem itself reports it is online. Check the router and Wi-Fi side next: restart your router, then test with a device plugged in by cable.
The light will not settle after 5 minutes Recheck every coax connection and remove any splitter or amplifier you installed. If nothing changes, contact Rogers technical support.
The update light has been going for a long time Rogers says to wait at least 10 minutes. Do not unplug the modem in the middle of an update.

Rogers’ own troubleshooting guide gives this fix for a flashing amber light:

Tighten the coaxial cable at both ends. Unplug the Gateway, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in and wait at least 5 minutes to see if the light returns to solid white.
